Surface Water

Introduction
The main objective of the Surface Water Division is to provide necessary scientific inputs for the assessment, development and management of the surface water resources in the humid region. The major functions of the division are to carryout research, consultancy and imparting training on various aspects of surface water hydrology.  The thrust areas of the research activities mainly comprise of the Establishment of Database, Forest Hydrology, Urban Hydrology, Estuarine Dynamics, Sedimentation Studies, Wetland Hydrology and Integrated River Basin Management.
The necessary infrastructure and manpower to carry out the research activities were mobilized with the funds from the state, national and international agencies. The topographic maps (GTS) and historical data on various hydro-meteorological parameters of the region were collected from various agencies/ departments and stored, documented / compiled during the early periods. Surface Water Division has been keen to take up research projects of current interest to the region and to give suggestions to the concerned Government departments/ Organizations. The   projects are being carried out with grants from international agencies like JBIC, UNEP, UNDP, Indo-Dutch Mission, World Bank, national agencies like the CBIP, INCID, INCOH, DST, MoEF, MoWR, DoE, IGIDR, RGNDWM and State agencies like KSEB, KWA, STEC, WRD, KFD, WGDP, DPEA, KRWSA, etc.
The Surface Water Division has so far completed 86 projects and brought out about 90 technical reports.  About 200 research papers have been published in national/ international journals/ seminars/ workshop/ symposium etc.  Currently 10 projects are being investigated of which four are funded by national agencies.
